Base History & Name
U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Francisco Ruiz, 49th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron maintenance specialist, places a remove-before-flight red tag on a U.S. Air Force MQ-9 Reaper at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, July 9, 2024. Ruiz was part of a group of maintenance professionals from Holloman...
Holloman Air Force Base was established in 1942 near Alamogordo, New Mexico, to support World War II training and testing. Its original mission focused on training bomber crews and supporting research for the Army Air Forces.
The base's remote location and vast airspace made it ideal for experimental work and large-scale exercises. These features allowed for safe, innovative testing away from populated areas.
During the Cold War, Holloman became a hub for missile development and aerospace research. The base hosted the Air Force Missile Development Center, which conducted pioneering tests on guided missiles and unmanned aircraft.
The famous "rocket sled" tests at Holloman contributed to advancements in aviation medicine and safety. The base also supported the V-2 rocket program, using captured German technology to push aerospace boundaries.
Over the decades, Holloman has been home to a variety of significant units. These include the 49th Fighter Wing, which arrived in 1992 and continues to operate advanced fighter aircraft.
The base has also hosted German Air Force training units, reflecting its international partnerships. Holloman played key roles in the Vietnam era and during Operation Enduring Freedom, providing pilot training and support.
Today, Holloman AFB remains a vital center for pilot training and unmanned aerial systems operations. It supports both active-duty and allied air forces, contributing to national security and the local economy.
The base has retained its original name since its dedication in 1942, honoring its namesake's legacy and historical significance.
Namesake
Col. Holloman's contributions to early missile technology were instrumental in advancing U.S. military capabilities. He tragically died in a plane crash in 1946, but his legacy lives on through the base that bears his name and its ongoing role in aerospace innovation.

PCS & Relocation Essentials
ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Georgia – Maj. James Hodgson, Air Force Reserve Headquarters (left), receives a briefing and relocation check sheet from Personal Property manager Staff Sgt. Brent Rochette, noncommissioned officer in charge, 78th Logistics Readiness Squadron’s Traffic Management Office at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, Dec. 15, 2021.
Arriving at Holloman AFB starts with receiving official orders. Next, contact the base Transportation Office to schedule your move. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) to set up your Household Goods (HHG) shipment or Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY). HHG moves let the government arrange movers, while PPM gives you more control but requires you to handle logistics and paperwork. Both options have pros and cons—compare them in DPS before deciding.
You may qualify for key entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA). TLE helps cover hotel costs while you secure housing, and DLA offsets relocation expenses. Start your DPS move request as soon as you have orders for better scheduling and to avoid peak season delays. Holloman AFB’s remote location means early planning is critical for on-time delivery of your household goods. Always keep your orders, receipts, and important documents handy during your move.
