Military Base History

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JB MDL) is the Department of Defense’s first and only tri-service joint base, combining Army, Air Force, and Navy installations. The base’s history began with three separate facilities: Fort Dix (established 1917), McGuire Air Force Base (established 1941), and Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst (established 1921).
Each facility started with a unique mission. Fort Dix served as an Army training center, McGuire AFB operated as an air transport hub, and Lakehurst focused on naval aviation and airship operations.
Major expansions occurred during World War II. Fort Dix trained hundreds of thousands of soldiers, while McGuire AFB became a key airlift and logistics node.
Lakehurst gained notoriety as the site of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster and later supported naval aviation research. During the Cold War, all three sites adapted to new missions, including air defense, mobility, and reserve training.
In 2009, the three installations merged under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process to form JB MDL. This merger streamlined operations and enabled support for joint missions.
Today, JB MDL hosts active duty, Guard, and Reserve units from all military branches, including the Army National Guard. The base serves as a critical logistics, training, and power-projection platform for the eastern United States.
The installation’s name has changed over time to reflect its evolving mission. Fort Dix, McGuire AFB, and Lakehurst NAES each kept their names until the 2009 merger, when they became Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
This change marked a new era of integrated, multi-service operations and community engagement in New Jersey.

JB MDL features several main entry points, with the McGuire Main Gate and Dix Main Gate serving as primary access points. PCS & Relocation Essentials

When you receive PCS orders to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JB MDL), start by contacting your current installation’s Transportation Office. They help you schedule your move and explain your entitlements. You’ll choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, a Personally Procured Move (PPM), or a combination of both. Most service members use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) to manage shipments and track progress online. Register and start your move in DPS as soon as you have orders to avoid delays, especially during the busy summer season. JB MDL’s location in New Jersey can mean high demand for movers—early action helps secure your preferred dates. Understand your PCS entitlements before you move. You may qualify for Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) to cover short-term lodging, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to offset relocation costs. Know your weight allowance and keep receipts for all expenses. JB MDL’s central location means you may face toll roads and traffic, so plan your travel route and arrival times carefully. Check in with the JB MDL Housing Office and your unit sponsor upon arrival for local guidance and support.
