Military Base History

Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB) began in the early 20th century, when the U.S. military established aviation operations near Washington, D.C. The original Anacostia Naval Air Station opened in 1917 to support naval aviation and experimental flights.

Its proximity to the nation’s capital made the site a strategic location for defense and ceremonial missions. The base’s location enabled rapid response and close coordination with federal agencies.

During World War II, the installation expanded quickly to meet growing military needs. The adjacent Bolling Field, established in 1918, became a key hub for Army Air Corps operations, including training and logistics.

Bolling Field hosted a variety of units over the decades, such as the Air Force District of Washington and ceremonial commands. These units supported high-profile events and provided dignitary support in the capital.

Throughout the Cold War, the base played a vital role in national security by supporting communications, intelligence, and air operations. In 2010, the Department of Defense merged Naval Support Facility Anacostia and Bolling Air Force Base to create Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling.

This realignment was part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, which streamlined operations and enhanced joint-service cooperation. The merger improved efficiency and fostered collaboration among military branches.

Today, JBAB operates as a joint installation under Air Force leadership, supporting a wide range of missions. The base houses critical headquarters, ceremonial units, and support services for military personnel and their families.

JBAB remains a cornerstone of military presence in the District of Columbia, providing essential support to national defense and the local community.
