Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) supports the U.S. Navy's Pacific operations and serves as a key defense point for Hawaii. Its origins date to the early 20th century, when Pearl Harbor Naval Station and Hickam Field were built as separate facilities.
Pearl Harbor became the main base for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, while Hickam Field supported Army Air Corps operations. Construction surged in the 1930s as Pacific tensions rose, adding dry docks, airfields, and support buildings to boost military readiness.
The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 marked a turning point in U.S. military history. The base suffered heavy damage but played a crucial role in the nation's World War II response.
Throughout the war, Pearl Harbor served as the primary logistics and repair hub for the Pacific Fleet. Hickam Field became a vital air operations center, and both installations expanded rapidly to support major Pacific campaigns.
During the Cold War, the base adapted to new strategic needs by hosting advanced submarines, aircraft, and missile defense units. It remained a critical outpost for U.S. deterrence and rapid response in the Asia-Pacific region.
Over the decades, the base hosted units such as the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pacific Air Forces, and various joint commands. This diverse presence strengthened its role in regional security and military readiness.
In October 2010, the two historic installations merged under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, creating Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Today, JBPHH supports Navy and Air Force operations, disaster response, and regional security missions.
It is a cornerstone of U.S. presence in the Indo-Pacific and a vital part of the local Hawaiian community. JBPHH continues to play a central role in maintaining stability and readiness in the region.
