Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story (JEBLC-FS) is the premier training and operations center for the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic amphibious forces. The base originated in 1942 as Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, built to support amphibious operations during World War II.
Its location near the Chesapeake Bay provided ideal access for training and deployment. The base’s proximity to the water made it a strategic site for launching and supporting amphibious missions.
During WWII, the base rapidly expanded to accommodate thousands of troops. It became a hub for amphibious assault training, supporting major operations in both the European and Pacific Theaters.
The base’s mission evolved through the Cold War, hosting specialized units such as the Navy SEALs. It also supported NATO exercises, adapting to new defense strategies and technologies.
Fort Story, established in 1914 as a coastal artillery post, later shifted to amphibious training and logistics. This evolution reflected changing military needs and advancements in warfare.
In 2009, the two installations merged to form Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. This merger reflected a broader joint-service mission and enhanced operational capabilities.
Today, JEBLC-FS supports over 18,000 personnel and is home to key units like Naval Special Warfare Group TWO and the Army’s 11th Transportation Battalion. The base plays a vital role in expeditionary warfare, disaster response, and joint training.
JEBLC-FS is a cornerstone of U.S. military readiness on the East Coast, ensuring rapid response and effective support for a wide range of missions.
