Base History & Name

An Airbus A321 aircraft, designated Flagship Valor, rests outside a hangar during the Flagship Valor tour event at Joint Base Andrews, Md., March 20, 2025. The Valor Tour flew Medal of Honor recipients to military bases to commemorate the grand opening of the National Medal of Honor Museum in...

Joint Base Andrews began as Camp Springs Army Air Field in 1942, built to support World War II air operations. Its main mission was to train and operate fighter and bomber units defending the U.S. capital.

The base quickly became a hub for air defense and logistics due to its strategic location near Washington, D.C. This made it vital for protecting national interests during wartime.

Post-war expansion in 1948 transformed the installation into Andrews Air Force Base, named for Lt. Gen. Frank M. Andrews. The base hosted key Air Force units during the Cold War, including the 89th Airlift Wing.

The 89th Airlift Wing became responsible for transporting the President, Vice President, and other high-level officials. This executive airlift role made Andrews a symbol of national command and control.

Major construction phases in the 1950s and 1960s modernized runways and support facilities. These upgrades enabled the base to handle larger aircraft and more complex missions.

Over time, Andrews became synonymous with "Air Force One" operations, supporting both military and diplomatic missions. Its reputation grew as a center for high-profile flights.

In 2009, the base was officially redesignated as Joint Base Andrews after the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. This merger included Naval Air Facility Washington.

Today, Joint Base Andrews remains a critical installation for national security, providing rapid global mobility and serving as the aerial gateway for U.S. leaders. The base also supports local communities through partnerships and emergency response capabilities.

Namesake

Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews (1884–1943) was a pioneering U.S. Army Air Forces officer and a key architect of American air power. He played a central role in developing the Army Air Corps into a modern fighting force and advocated for independent air operations.

Andrews commanded several major air units, including the Caribbean Defense Command and the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He died in a plane crash in Iceland in 1943 while serving overseas. His legacy endures as a visionary leader who shaped the future of U.S. military aviation.

The Rental Partnership Program (RPP) and Military Housing Office (MHO) can also assist with off-base options.
