Joint Base Andrews began as Camp Springs Army Air Field in 1942, built to support World War II air operations. Its main mission was to train and operate fighter and bomber units defending the U.S. capital.
The base quickly became a hub for air defense and logistics due to its strategic location near Washington, D.C. This made it vital for protecting national interests during wartime.
Post-war expansion in 1948 transformed the installation into Andrews Air Force Base, named for Lt. Gen. Frank M. Andrews. The base hosted key Air Force units during the Cold War, including the 89th Airlift Wing.
The 89th Airlift Wing became responsible for transporting the President, Vice President, and other high-level officials. This executive airlift role made Andrews a symbol of national command and control.
Major construction phases in the 1950s and 1960s modernized runways and support facilities. These upgrades enabled the base to handle larger aircraft and more complex missions.
Over time, Andrews became synonymous with "Air Force One" operations, supporting both military and diplomatic missions. Its reputation grew as a center for high-profile flights.
In 2009, the base was officially redesignated as Joint Base Andrews after the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. This merger included Naval Air Facility Washington.
Today, Joint Base Andrews remains a critical installation for national security, providing rapid global mobility and serving as the aerial gateway for U.S. leaders. The base also supports local communities through partnerships and emergency response capabilities.
