Joint Base Langley-Eustis (JBLE) in Virginia combines two historic military sites: Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis. This unique installation brings together decades of military tradition and innovation.
Langley Field was established in 1916 as one of the first military airfields in the United States. Its early focus was aviation research and pilot training, setting the stage for future advancements.
Fort Eustis, founded in 1918, served primarily as an Army transportation hub and training center. Its mission supported the movement of troops and supplies across the nation.
During World War II, both Langley and Eustis played critical roles in the war effort. Langley became a center for bomber crew training and aircraft development, while Fort Eustis trained thousands in railway and port operations.
The Cold War era saw Langley become a key site for air defense and home to Tactical Air Command. At the same time, Eustis expanded its logistics and transportation missions to meet growing military needs.
In 2010, the Bases Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process merged Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis, creating Joint Base Langley-Eustis. This move streamlined operations and fostered collaboration between the Air Force and Army.
Today, JBLE supports a wide range of missions, including air combat, intelligence, logistics, and transportation. It is home to the 633rd Air Base Wing, the 1st Fighter Wing, and the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command.
The installation's name change to Joint Base Langley-Eustis in 2010 marked a significant shift, reflecting its dual-service role and modern mission.
JBLE continues to play a vital part in national defense and the Hampton Roads community, supporting both global operations and local partnerships.
