Keesler Air Force Base began as a vital training center during World War II. Established in 1941, the base’s original mission was to train aviation mechanics and support personnel for the Army Air Corps.

The base was constructed rapidly to meet wartime needs, with thousands of recruits arriving within months of its opening. Rapid expansion allowed Keesler to quickly become a cornerstone of military preparedness.

The base expanded quickly during WWII, becoming one of the largest technical training centers in the U.S. military. It trained not only mechanics but also radar operators and electronics specialists, supporting the Allied war effort.

After the war, Keesler shifted focus to peacetime training and played a key role in the development of Air Force technical education. Peacetime innovation ensured the base remained relevant in a changing world.

During the Cold War, Keesler AFB became a hub for electronics and radar training, adapting to the evolving needs of the Air Force. The base hosted several significant units, including the 81st Training Wing, which remains its primary unit today.

Keesler also supported hurricane relief and other humanitarian missions along the Gulf Coast. Humanitarian support highlighted the base’s commitment to both national defense and community service.

Today, Keesler AFB is a premier technical training location for the U.S. Air Force, specializing in cyber, communications, and electronics instruction. The base also supports local economic growth and community partnerships.

Its name has remained unchanged since its dedication in 1941, honoring its original namesake. Enduring legacy continues to define Keesler’s role in Air Force history.

Namesake

Keesler Air Force Base is named after 2nd Lt. Samuel Reeves Keesler Jr., a native of Mississippi. Lt. Keesler served as an aerial observer in the U.S. Army Air Service during World War I.

Lt. Keesler was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery in combat. He was mortally wounded during an aerial mission over France in 1918, and his sacrifice symbolizes the dedication and heroism of early military aviators.

Start your PCS to Keesler AFB by reviewing your official orders and contacting your base Transportation Office as soon as possible. You’ll need to choose your move type—either a Household Goods (HHG) shipment managed by the government or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also known as a DITY move, where you handle the packing and transport. Both options have pros and cons, so discuss with your Transportation Office to find the best fit for your situation.

Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule, track, and manage your move. This online system is required for all DoD moves and helps you coordinate with moving companies or submit reimbursement claims if you opt for a PPM. Make sure to keep all receipts and weigh tickets if you go the PPM route.

Take advantage of your PCS entitlements, including Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA). TLE helps cover the cost of lodging and meals while you secure permanent housing near Keesler AFB, and DLA helps offset miscellaneous moving costs. Check current rates and eligibility before you move.

Housing Options

Housing options at Keesler AFB range from on-base privatized homes to rentals in Biloxi and surrounding areas. Most base housing is managed by Hunt Military Communities, offering single-family homes and duplexes. The Rental Partnership Program (RPP) and Military Housing Office (MHO) help those seeking off-base rentals, but many families choose local community housing due to area preference or waitlists for on-base units. Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) helps cover costs, with an E-5 with dependents receiving about $1,503/month for 2025 in the Gulfport, MS area. Use our BAH Calculator to estimate your allowance. Rental rates are generally affordable, but summer tourism can impact availability and price near the beach. Be aware that on-base housing may have wait times, especially for larger homes or peak PCS season.
