Little Rock Air Force Base (AFB) was established in 1955 as a key Strategic Air Command (SAC) installation during the Cold War. Its original mission supported bomber and missile operations, reflecting the era’s focus on nuclear deterrence. The base’s location near Little Rock, Arkansas, offered strategic advantages for rapid deployment and training.
Construction began in 1953, and the base officially opened two years later. Over the decades, Little Rock AFB expanded to accommodate new aircraft and missions. In the 1960s, the base became home to the 308th Strategic Missile Wing, which managed Titan II intercontinental ballistic missiles.
This marked a significant shift, as the base played a central role in the nation’s nuclear defense strategy until the missiles were deactivated in the 1980s. The transition underscored Little Rock AFB’s adaptability to evolving military needs.
Throughout its history, the base has hosted several major units, including the 314th Airlift Wing, which arrived in 1970. The 314th’s focus on tactical airlift and C-130 training established Little Rock AFB as the “Home of C-130 Combat Airlift.”
The base has supported U.S. military operations worldwide, including Vietnam, Desert Storm, and humanitarian missions. Its contributions have enhanced the Air Force’s global reach and response capabilities.
Today, Little Rock AFB remains a vital hub for air mobility and training. It is the primary C-130 training center for the U.S. Air Force and allied nations, supporting both national defense and international partnerships.
The base also supports the local community as a major employer and economic driver. Notably, the installation has retained its original name since its establishment, with no significant official name changes.
