Military Base History

Senior Airman Kyle Lucas, 2nd Space Operations Squadron satellite systems operator, and his brother Tyler, also a member of the Air Force, speak with a commentator during the Titan Games in Los Angeles, California, Jan. 31, 2019. Tyler is currently stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and...

Los Angeles Space Force Base (SFB) began as a crucial hub for U.S. military missile and space operations. Established in 1961 as Los Angeles Air Force Station, it supported ballistic missile development and managed space and missile systems for the Air Force.

The base quickly became a center for the nation’s space and missile innovation. It hosted the Space and Missile Systems Organization (SAMSO) and later the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), both vital to advancing U.S. space technology.

During the Cold War, Los Angeles AFS played a vital role in overseeing satellite launches, missile warning systems, and intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) development. Its technical workforce and leadership shaped the U.S. military’s space capabilities, supporting programs like the Defense Support Program (DSP) satellites and the Global Positioning System (GPS).

In 2021, the installation was officially renamed Los Angeles Space Force Base to reflect the creation of the U.S. Space Force. This change marked its transition from an Air Force Station to a Space Force Base, aligning with its mission to acquire, develop, and sustain military space systems.

Today, Los Angeles SFB serves as the headquarters for Space Systems Command, the core of U.S. military space acquisition and innovation. The base continues to drive advancements in satellite communications, missile warning, and space domain awareness, supporting both national defense and the Southern California community.

Housing Options

Los Angeles SFB does not have traditional on-base housing; most personnel use the local rental market. Housing options include apartments, townhomes, and single-family homes in nearby communities. The Military Housing Office (MHO) can assist with referrals, but privatized or government-managed housing is not available on the installation itself. Waitlists are uncommon, but competition for affordable rentals can be intense due to the area's high demand and cost of living. Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for Los Angeles is set high to reflect these costs. For example, an E-5 with dependents receives around $3,741/month in 2025. You can estimate your specific BAH using our BAH Calculator. High rent and cost of living may require flexibility in desired amenities or commute distance. Some personnel use the Rental Partnership Program (RPP) for discounted rent or look to share larger homes with other service members for savings.
