Base History & Name
Robert Bouley retired World War II Marine Corps and Diana Kee meet guests at the Tampa Bay AirFest at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, March 30, 2024. Bouley was honored for his contributions to the United States along with other World War II veterans.
MacDill Air Force Base began as MacDill Field in 1939 to strengthen U.S. air power as global tensions rose before World War II. The base’s original mission focused on training bomber crews, a critical need as the nation prepared for conflict.
Its strategic location near Tampa Bay made MacDill ideal for year-round flying and rapid expansion. The site quickly became a cornerstone of military aviation training.
During World War II, MacDill Field became a major training center for B-17 and B-26 bomber crews. The base expanded rapidly, adding runways, hangars, and support facilities to accommodate thousands of personnel.
By the war’s end, MacDill had trained and deployed numerous units vital to the Allied victory. Its contributions were essential to the success of U.S. air operations overseas.
After the war, MacDill shifted roles several times, hosting Strategic Air Command units during the early Cold War. The base supported B-47 and B-52 bombers, reflecting its new focus on nuclear deterrence.
In 1959, the installation was officially renamed MacDill Air Force Base to align with the Air Force’s naming conventions. This change marked a new era in the base’s history.
In the late 20th century, MacDill transitioned to an air refueling mission, hosting KC-135 Stratotankers. The base also became home to U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) and U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM).
These commands made MacDill a hub for planning and directing U.S. military operations in the Middle East and beyond. Its strategic importance continued to grow.
Today, MacDill AFB remains a vital installation for the Air Force and the Department of Defense. The base supports global operations, provides air refueling, and serves as a key command center for U.S. military strategy.
MacDill also plays a significant role in the Tampa community, contributing to the local economy and fostering strong military-civilian partnerships.
