Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point was established in 1941 to support the rapid expansion of U.S. military aviation during World War II. Its original mission focused on training and supporting Marine aviation units, especially for operations in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
The base's location in eastern North Carolina offered ample space and proximity to the coast, making it ideal for flight operations and logistics. This strategic placement helped the station meet the demands of wartime aviation training and support.
Construction began in 1941, and the air station was officially commissioned in May 1942. During World War II, Cherry Point became a major training and operations hub, hosting units such as Marine Aircraft Group 14 and supporting anti-submarine patrols.
The base expanded rapidly, adding runways, hangars, and support facilities to meet the needs of wartime operations. These improvements allowed Cherry Point to handle increased traffic and mission requirements.
Throughout the Cold War, MCAS Cherry Point played a vital role in Marine Corps aviation. It supported jet aircraft transitions and hosted Fleet Marine Force Atlantic units.
The base served as a key logistics and maintenance center, becoming home to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, which remains its principal tenant today.
In recent decades, Cherry Point has supported operations in the Middle East and humanitarian missions worldwide. It is a critical site for KC-130 aerial refueling, electronic warfare, and maintenance operations.
The base continues to drive the local economy and serves as a cornerstone for Marine aviation on the East Coast.
Name Changes: The installation has always been known as Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point since its commissioning in 1942. It derives its name from the local Cherry Point area and has not undergone any official name changes.

PCS & Relocation Essentials
A moving truck is unloaded as a family moves into their new home. The "Making the Right Move" workshop assists service members and their families by informing them of what to expect at their next duty station and how to prepare for their travels.
When you receive PCS orders to MCAS Cherry Point, start by reviewing your orders and contacting your local Transportation Office. Early action helps secure your preferred move dates and ensures entitlements like Dislocation Allowance (DLA) and Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) are processed smoothly. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to arrange your move, whether you choose a Household Goods (HHG) shipment or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY). Both options have specific requirements and reimbursement processes, so read the guidance carefully.
MCAS Cherry Point supports both HHG and PPM moves. Most families use the HHG shipment for professional packing and transport, but a PPM may offer more flexibility and possible financial incentive. Track your move and upload required documents in DPS to avoid delays. Upon arrival, check in with the base's Transportation Office for local procedures and to schedule delivery of your shipments. Take advantage of TLE for up to 10 days in temporary lodging while you secure housing. DLA helps offset relocation costs not covered elsewhere.
For MCAS Cherry Point, the base’s Relocation Assistance Program and your unit sponsor are valuable resources. They can provide local insights, help with in-processing, and answer questions about the area. Contact them early to streamline your transition.
