McConnell Air Force Base started as Wichita Municipal Airport, built in the early 1940s to support the region’s growing aviation industry. In 1951, the U.S. Air Force leased the airport to meet the expanding needs of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) during the Cold War.
The base was officially activated as McConnell Air Force Base in 1953, named for the McConnell brothers, three local aviators who served in World War II. During the Cold War, McConnell AFB played a vital role as a bomber and tanker base.
The base hosted B-47 Stratojets and later B-52 Stratofortresses, supporting America’s nuclear deterrence mission. In the 1960s, McConnell transitioned to hosting KC-135 Stratotankers, which remain a core mission today.
The 22nd Air Refueling Wing, a key unit at McConnell, has enabled global reach for U.S. air power for decades. McConnell AFB has adapted to changing defense needs over the years.
In the 1990s, the base became a hub for air refueling operations, supporting missions in Operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. The base was selected as the first main operating base for the KC-46A Pegasus tanker, marking a new era in air mobility.
Today, McConnell AFB is a cornerstone of U.S. Air Force air refueling capability. It supports both active duty and Air National Guard units, contributing to national defense and the local Wichita community.
The base has retained its name since its 1953 designation, honoring the McConnell brothers’ legacy.
