Military Base History
Airmen from the 5th Civil Engineer Squadron work on renovating the floor of the 5th Bomb Wing headquarters on Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, April 18, 2025. Minot AFB’s infrastructure was built during the Cold War and thus the building’s piping required a complete overhaul when it was...
Minot Air Force Base was established in 1957 to strengthen U.S. strategic air power in the northern Great Plains. Its original mission supported Strategic Air Command (SAC) operations, providing a base for long-range bombers and later, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
The base’s location in North Dakota was chosen for its strategic distance from both coasts and proximity to the Arctic. This placement enhanced deterrence against Soviet threats during the Cold War.
Construction began in 1956, with rapid expansion to support both bomber and missile operations. By 1961, Minot AFB became home to the 4136th Strategic Wing, which later transitioned to the 5th Bombardment Wing.
The arrival of the 91st Strategic Missile Wing in 1968 marked a significant expansion for the base. Minot became one of only three U.S. bases to host both B-52 bombers and Minuteman ICBMs.
Throughout the Cold War, Minot AFB played a vital role in nuclear deterrence by maintaining a constant state of readiness. The base’s dual mission—hosting both nuclear bombers and missiles—made it a cornerstone of America’s strategic defense.
Over the decades, Minot has also supported air refueling and reconnaissance missions, adapting to changing defense needs. Its flexibility has ensured continued relevance in U.S. military strategy.
Today, Minot AFB remains a critical component of U.S. nuclear deterrence. It is home to the 5th Bomb Wing, which operates B-52H Stratofortress bombers, and the 91st Missile Wing, which operates Minuteman III ICBMs.
The base supports local communities as a major employer and continues to adapt to evolving security challenges. Minot AFB has not undergone any significant official name changes since its establishment.
