Base History & Name

Moody Air Force Base was established in 1941 near Valdosta, Georgia, as a training site for Army Air Corps pilots during World War II. Its original mission focused on advanced single-engine flight training, supporting the rapid expansion of U.S. air power.

The base was named Moody Field in honor of Major George Putnam Moody, a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot who died in a crash. This dedication reflected the Air Corps’ tradition of honoring fallen aviators.

During World War II, Moody Field played a vital role in preparing pilots for combat. The base underwent significant construction and expansion to accommodate thousands of trainees and support personnel.

After the war, the base briefly closed in 1947 but quickly reopened in response to Cold War needs. Its mission shifted to include jet pilot training and, later, tactical fighter operations.

Throughout the Cold War, Moody AFB hosted a range of units, including the 3550th Pilot Training Wing and the 347th Tactical Fighter Wing. The base adapted to changing Air Force needs, supporting air defense, tactical airlift, and rescue missions.

Moody AFB also played a key role in training aircrews for Southeast Asia operations during the Vietnam War era. This training helped prepare personnel for the unique challenges of combat in that region.

Today, Moody AFB is home to the 23rd Wing, known for its "Flying Tigers" heritage. The base supports combat search and rescue, close air support, and security forces missions.

Moody AFB remains a major employer in southern Georgia, contributing to both national defense and the local economy. The installation has retained its original name since its dedication in 1941.

The base was named in his honor to recognize his contributions to military aviation and his commitment to pilot safety and training.
