Military Base History
SMSgt Carter Brazell was promoted to the rank of Chief Master Seargant on March 1st, 2025 at NAS JRB, Fort Worth. Brazell will lead Airmen within the 73rd Aerial Port Squadron.
Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base (NAS Fort Worth JRB) began as Tarrant Field Airdrome in 1942, built to support World War II training and aircraft production. The base quickly became a hub for bomber and fighter pilot training, supporting the nearby Consolidated Vultee aircraft plant, which produced B-24 Liberators.
During WWII, the base's mission centered on training and logistics, fueling the Allied air campaign with skilled aviators and new aircraft. This focus helped ensure a steady flow of pilots and planes to the front lines.
Postwar, the installation was renamed Carswell Air Force Base in 1948, honoring Medal of Honor recipient Major Horace S. Carswell, Jr. Carswell AFB became a key Strategic Air Command (SAC) base during the Cold War, hosting B-36 Peacemaker and later B-52 Stratofortress bombers.
The base played a critical deterrence role, maintaining nuclear readiness and supporting U.S. global reach. Its presence helped shape national defense strategy throughout the Cold War era.
Following the Cold War, the 1993 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process led to the transfer of the installation from the Air Force to the Navy. In 1994, the base was officially redesignated as NAS Fort Worth JRB, becoming the first joint reserve base in the United States.
The installation now supports Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army, and Texas Air National Guard units, making it a vital multi-service reserve and training center. This joint mission enhances operational flexibility and resource sharing.
Today, NAS Fort Worth JRB remains a cornerstone of reserve readiness in North Texas. The base supports operational squadrons, reserve mobilization, and community partnerships, sustaining its legacy as a strategic military asset and local economic engine.
