Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West began as a strategic outpost in 1917, supporting seaplane operations during World War I. Its original mission focused on coastal defense and anti-submarine patrols, leveraging Key West's proximity to the Straits of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico.
The base's location made it a vital asset for monitoring maritime activity and protecting U.S. interests in the Caribbean region. Its position enabled rapid response to threats and enhanced national security during times of conflict.
During World War II, NAS Key West underwent major expansion. The Navy built new runways, hangars, and support facilities to accommodate a surge in aircraft and personnel.
The base became a hub for anti-submarine warfare, training, and convoy escort missions. Key units included patrol squadrons and blimp operations, which played a crucial role in defending Allied shipping lanes from German U-boats.
The Cold War era brought further growth and modernization. NAS Key West supported fleet training, missile testing, and advanced aerial combat exercises.
The installation hosted squadrons flying jet fighters and reconnaissance aircraft, serving as a key training site for Atlantic Fleet aviators. The base also played a role during the Cuban Missile Crisis, providing surveillance and rapid response capabilities.
Today, NAS Key West remains a premier training facility for naval aviation. It supports air-to-air combat training, electronic warfare, and joint exercises with allied forces.
The base also contributes to local disaster response and supports the region's economy. Its name, NAS Key West, has remained unchanged since its establishment, reflecting its enduring connection to the island community and its strategic maritime mission.

PCS & Relocation Essentials

When you receive PCS orders to NAS Key West, start by confirming your report date and contacting your current base’s Transportation Office. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to set up your move and track your shipment. You can choose a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), or a combination. Each move type has different requirements and reimbursement rules, so review your options carefully.
Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) help offset costs during your move. TLE covers short-term lodging while house-hunting or waiting for housing. DLA helps with miscellaneous relocation expenses. Track your entitlements and receipts closely. At NAS Key West, early coordination is key, since housing and storage options are limited due to the island’s size and popularity.
For local guidance, contact the base Transportation Office as soon as you have orders. They can answer questions about delivery timing, storage, and unique shipping considerations for island locations. Check the base website for arrival guides and up-to-date info on temporary lodging, especially during peak PCS season.
