Military Base History

Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore opened in 1961 as the U.S. Navy’s premier West Coast jet air base. The base’s original mission centered on supporting carrier-based jet aircraft, offering a modern facility for training and operations. Its California Central Valley location provided favorable flying weather and close proximity to the Pacific Fleet.
Construction began in the late 1950s to meet the Navy’s growing need for advanced jet operations. Over time, NAS Lemoore expanded with new runways, hangars, and support facilities. The base became home to several key strike fighter squadrons, including those flying the F/A-18 Hornet and later the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
During the Cold War and beyond, NAS Lemoore played a vital role in training and deploying naval aviators and support staff. Its squadrons participated in major conflicts such as the Vietnam War, Gulf War, and operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. With each new generation of carrier-based aircraft, the base’s strategic importance increased.
Today, NAS Lemoore remains the Navy’s largest master jet base on the West Coast. The base supports the Pacific Fleet’s carrier air wings and serves as a hub for advanced fighter training and readiness. NAS Lemoore also contributes significantly to the local economy and community. NAS Lemoore has retained its original name since establishment, with no significant official name changes.
