Military Base History

Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island opened in 1942 to meet the U.S. Navy’s urgent need for air patrol and defense along the Pacific Coast during World War II. The base’s original mission included maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, and training for naval aviators.

Its strategic location on Whidbey Island in Washington gave the Navy ideal access to the Pacific theater and protected inland waters. This placement allowed rapid deployment and effective defense of the region.

Construction began rapidly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, with the first runways and facilities finished in record time. The base expanded throughout the war, adding hangars, barracks, and support buildings to handle more personnel and aircraft.

During the Cold War, NAS Whidbey Island became a key site for patrol squadrons and electronic warfare units. The base introduced advanced aircraft such as the P-3 Orion and EA-6B Prowler to enhance its capabilities.

Major units stationed at NAS Whidbey Island have included:

  • Patrol Squadrons (VP)
  • Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadrons (VQ)
  • Electronic Attack Squadrons (VAQ)

The base played a vital role in surveillance and deterrence missions during the Cold War. It also supported U.S. operations in Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf.

Today, NAS Whidbey Island serves as the premier center for U.S. Navy electronic attack and maritime patrol aviation. The base hosts the EA-18G Growler fleet and P-8A Poseidon squadrons, supporting both national defense and the local economy.

The installation has retained its original name since its establishment, with no significant official name changes over the decades.

PCS & Relocation Essentials

A moving truck is unloaded as a family moves into their new home. The "Making the Right Move" workshop assists service members and their families by informing them of what to expect at their next duty station and how to prepare for their travels.

Arriving at NAS Whidbey Island starts with receiving your PCS orders and contacting your current installation’s Transportation Office. You’ll use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) to schedule your move and track your shipment. You can choose between a Household Goods (HHG) move, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move and may receive reimbursement. Both options have pros and cons, so compare carefully. As you plan, remember your entitlements. You may qualify for Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) to offset hotel costs while house-hunting, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to help with relocation expenses. These benefits are designed to ease your transition. DPS is your main tool for managing your move, uploading documents, and checking status. Arriving at NAS Whidbey Island, check in with the local Transportation Office for base-specific guidance. The area can be busy during summer, so book services and lodging early. Review the base newcomer’s guide for local info, and reach out to your sponsor for help with schools, housing, and local resources.
