Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Point Mugu began as a World War II training and testing site for anti-aircraft weapons. The U.S. Navy established the base in 1942 to support the development and testing of missiles and other ordnance.
Its coastal location offered ideal conditions for missile launches and tracking over the Pacific Ocean. The site’s geography made it a strategic choice for military innovation.
During the Cold War, Point Mugu expanded to become a hub for cutting-edge missile and electronic warfare testing. The base played a key role in the development of the Navy's guided missile program.
Point Mugu supported projects such as the AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-54 Phoenix. The Pacific Missile Test Center, established at Point Mugu, became a focal point for research and innovation.
Significant units stationed at Point Mugu have included the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division and various Fleet Replacement Squadrons. The base also supported NASA and other agencies with missile tracking and space launch support.
In 2000, Point Mugu merged with Naval Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme and San Nicolas Island to form Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC). Today, NBVC Point Mugu remains a critical site for missile testing, fleet training, and logistics.
NBVC Point Mugu supports both military and civilian missions, serving as a key employer and economic driver in the region. Its ongoing operations contribute to national defense and local prosperity.
Name Changes: The installation was originally known as Naval Air Station Point Mugu. In 2000, it became part of the consolidated Naval Base Ventura County, though the "Point Mugu" name is still commonly used to refer to this specific site within NBVC.
