Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Port Hueneme was established during World War II as a key West Coast port and logistics hub for the U.S. Navy. The base’s original mission supported the construction, supply, and deployment needs of the Navy’s Seabees—Naval Construction Battalions—who played a vital role in the Pacific theater.
The base’s deep-water port and proximity to Los Angeles made it a strategic asset for wartime operations. Its location enabled rapid movement of personnel and materials to support military campaigns across the Pacific.
Major construction and expansion occurred rapidly after its establishment in 1942. Port Hueneme became the primary embarkation point for men and materials headed to the Pacific islands, fueling the Navy’s efforts during the war.
The base grew to include extensive wharf facilities, warehouses, and training areas for Seabees and other support units. During the Cold War, Port Hueneme expanded further, adapting its mission to support missile testing and advanced naval logistics.
Over the decades, Port Hueneme hosted several key units, including the Naval Construction Battalion Center, the Pacific Seabees, and various logistics and engineering commands. The base played a critical role in supporting U.S. operations during the Korean War, Vietnam War, and later conflicts.
Port Hueneme provided construction, repair, and supply services that were essential for military readiness and overseas operations. Its support ensured that U.S. forces remained equipped and prepared during times of conflict.
In 2000, a major reorganization merged Port Hueneme with Naval Air Station Point Mugu to form Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC), reflecting a broader joint mission. This merger streamlined operations and enhanced the base’s capabilities.
Today, NBVC Port Hueneme continues to serve as the West Coast homeport for the Seabees, supports fleet logistics, and provides disaster response capabilities. The base remains a key economic and strategic asset for both the Navy and the local community.

When you receive PCS orders to NBVC Port Hueneme, start by reviewing your orders and contacting the Transportation Office. You’ll choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where movers pack and ship your items, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), which gives you more control and may result in reimbursement. Both options require using the Defense Personal Property System (DPS), the DoD’s official portal for managing your move.
You are entitled to Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) to offset hotel costs while house hunting, and a Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to cover relocation costs not reimbursed elsewhere. For NBVC Port Hueneme, follow standard CONUS rules for TLE and check current DLA rates before you move. Use DPS early to track shipments, upload documents, and communicate with moving companies.
