Base History & Name

A U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor performs an aerial demonstration alongside a F-5 Tiger II during Aviation Nation 2025 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, April 6, 2025. Aviation Nation honored the heritage of the U.S. Air Force by showcasing the evolution of airpower through aerial demonstrations and...

Nellis Air Force Base began as Las Vegas Army Air Field in 1941, supporting World War II pilot training. The base’s original mission focused on flexible gunnery training for bomber crews, which was crucial for the war effort.

Its desert location offered ideal flying conditions and ample space for ranges, making it a prime site for military aviation activities.

After World War II, the base shifted to advanced pilot and aircrew training. This change reflected the Air Force’s growing need for skilled personnel during the early Cold War.

In 1950, the installation was renamed Nellis Air Force Base to honor a fallen pilot. The base expanded rapidly, adding new runways, hangars, and support facilities to accommodate jet aircraft and increased training demands.

Nellis became home to the USAF Weapons School and the Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s official aerial demonstration team. The base played a vital role in developing air combat tactics.

It hosted the first Red Flag exercises in the 1970s, revolutionizing realistic combat training and shaping modern air warfare strategies.

Today, Nellis AFB is a premier center for advanced air combat training, supporting joint and coalition exercises. It anchors the Nevada Test and Training Range, one of the world’s largest military airspaces.

The base remains a key economic and community partner in the Las Vegas area and has retained the name Nellis Air Force Base since its 1950 renaming.

Namesake

Nellis Air Force Base is named for 1st Lt. William Harrell Nellis, a P-47 Thunderbolt pilot from Searchlight, Nevada. He flew 70 combat missions over Europe during World War II. Lt. Nellis was killed in action on 27 December 1944 when his aircraft was shot down near Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge.

Lt. Nellis is remembered for his bravery and sacrifice. His legacy connects the base to the local Nevada community and honors the service of all airmen who gave their lives in defense of the nation.

PCS & Relocation Essentials

A moving contractor loads a moving truck with a service member's household goods during the permanent change of station peak-season at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. March 7, 2018. Planning an ahead will make for a more successful relocation experience.

Arriving at Nellis AFB starts with receiving official orders and promptly contacting your local Transportation Office. This office will guide you through the move process, including setting up your account in the Defense Personal Property System (DPS). DPS is your main tool for scheduling, tracking, and managing your move. You can choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move and may be reimbursed for costs. Both options require careful planning and documentation. Service members are entitled to Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) to help cover the cost of lodging while securing permanent housing. Dislocation Allowance (DLA) is also available to offset relocation expenses. Nellis AFB is a busy hub, especially during peak PCS season. Early coordination and using DPS will help you avoid delays and ensure your entitlements are processed quickly.

Housing Options

Nellis AFB offers a mix of housing options for service members, including privatized on-base housing managed by Hunt Military Communities, Military Housing Office (MHO) oversight, and a strong off-base rental market in the Las Vegas metro area. On-base neighborhoods feature single-family homes and townhomes with access to playgrounds, parks, and community amenities. However, due to high demand, waitlists for on-base housing can be common—especially for larger homes or families. Many personnel, especially those stationed temporarily or seeking more space, opt for off-base rentals in nearby communities. The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for Nellis AFB reflects the local cost of living, which can be higher than average due to its proximity to Las Vegas. For example, the 2025 BAH for an E-5 with dependents is around $2,100 per month. You can estimate your specific BAH using our BAH Calculator. Off-base housing options range from apartments to single-family homes, but prices can vary widely by neighborhood and commute time.
