Nellis Air Force Base began as Las Vegas Army Air Field in 1941, supporting World War II pilot training. The base’s original mission focused on flexible gunnery training for bomber crews, which was crucial for the war effort.
Its desert location offered ideal flying conditions and ample space for ranges, making it a prime site for military aviation activities.
After World War II, the base shifted to advanced pilot and aircrew training. This change reflected the Air Force’s growing need for skilled personnel during the early Cold War.
In 1950, the installation was renamed Nellis Air Force Base to honor a fallen pilot. The base expanded rapidly, adding new runways, hangars, and support facilities to accommodate jet aircraft and increased training demands.
Nellis became home to the USAF Weapons School and the Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s official aerial demonstration team. The base played a vital role in developing air combat tactics.
It hosted the first Red Flag exercises in the 1970s, revolutionizing realistic combat training and shaping modern air warfare strategies.
Today, Nellis AFB is a premier center for advanced air combat training, supporting joint and coalition exercises. It anchors the Nevada Test and Training Range, one of the world’s largest military airspaces.
The base remains a key economic and community partner in the Las Vegas area and has retained the name Nellis Air Force Base since its 1950 renaming.
