Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station (ARS) began as a World War II-era military airfield, constructed in 1942 to support the war effort. Its original mission focused on aircraft modification, repair, and pilot training, reflecting the urgent needs of the era.
The base was initially known as Bell Aircraft Corporation Airport, serving both military and industrial aviation needs. This dual-purpose role helped meet critical wartime demands for skilled pilots and reliable aircraft.
Postwar years brought expansion and new missions to the installation. In 1946, the base transitioned to Air Force Reserve control, becoming Niagara Falls Municipal Airport and later Niagara Falls Air Force Base.
During the Cold War, the base hosted air defense and refueling units, including the 914th Airlift Wing and 107th Air Refueling Wing. These units provided essential support for U.S. and NATO operations, especially during periods of heightened global tension.
Throughout the late 20th century, the base adapted to changing defense priorities. It underwent several realignments and infrastructure upgrades, particularly during the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) processes of the 1990s and 2000s.
The installation's name officially became Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, reflecting its primary Reserve mission. This change highlighted the base’s evolving role within the Air Force structure.
Today, Niagara Falls ARS remains a vital hub for Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard operations. It supports airlift, refueling, and homeland defense missions, while also serving as a key employer and community partner in Western New York.
The base's strategic location near the U.S.-Canada border continues to shape its importance in national defense and disaster response. Its ongoing contributions ensure it remains a cornerstone of regional security.
