Military Base History
From the National Archives dated January 19, 1926, The S-Class submarine seen in Dry Dock 1 in 1926 was the first class of submarine designed for ocean and coastal missions. NNSY has seen many changes as it adapted and grew with the ever-upgrading naval technology. In 100 years, the dedication...
Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) began in 1767 as the Gosport Shipyard, established by the British Royal Navy to support ship construction and repair. After the American Revolution, the U.S. Navy took control in 1801, making it one of the nation's oldest and most important naval facilities.
Its original mission focused on building and maintaining warships for the growing U.S. fleet. The shipyard’s early work laid the foundation for its future as a key player in American naval power.
The shipyard expanded rapidly during major conflicts. During the Civil War, Union forces recaptured and rebuilt the yard after Confederate destruction. In World War I and World War II, NNSY underwent massive growth to meet wartime demands.
NNSY added dry docks, workshops, and new technologies during these wars. The shipyard repaired and modernized hundreds of vessels, playing a crucial role in U.S. naval operations.
Throughout the Cold War, NNSY adapted to support nuclear-powered ships and submarines. It became a leader in nuclear maintenance and overhaul, hosting significant repair and engineering commands.
The shipyard has been a hub for skilled civilian and military workers. Its workforce has contributed to both national security and the local economy for generations.
Today, NNSY remains vital. It is the Navy's oldest and largest industrial facility, specializing in the overhaul, repair, and modernization of ships and submarines.
The shipyard supports national defense and the local economy, employing thousands in the Hampton Roads region. Since 1862, it has been known as Norfolk Naval Shipyard, reflecting its central role in U.S. naval history.

PCS & Relocation Essentials
Movers load a service member’s household goods into a moving truck at a residence in Pacific Grove, Calif., May 11.
When you receive PCS orders to Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY), start by reviewing your orders and contacting the base Transportation Office. Early action helps secure your preferred move dates and avoids delays. You can choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move and may receive reimbursement. Both options require you to use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule, track, and manage your move. Understanding your entitlements is key. Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) covers some lodging costs while you search for permanent housing, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps offset relocation expenses. Check current rates and allowances before your move. NNSY’s location in Portsmouth, VA, means high demand during summer. Book early, and reach out to your sponsor or the base for local guidance on housing and check-in procedures. Visit official resources for up-to-date info and support.
