Military Base History

Naval Support Activity (NSA) Mid-South began as the Naval Reserve Aviation Base Memphis in 1942, built to train aviators during World War II. Its original mission was to support the rapid expansion of naval aviation and provide essential training for pilots and support personnel.
The base’s location in Millington, Tennessee offered strategic inland protection and easy access to transportation networks. These advantages made it an ideal site for large-scale military training operations during the war.
During World War II, the installation underwent major construction, expanding runways, hangars, and barracks to accommodate thousands of trainees. This growth allowed the base to meet the urgent demand for skilled aviators and support staff.
After the war, the base shifted toward technical training and became the Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) Memphis. Key units arrived, and advanced programs for aviation maintenance and support were developed during this period.
Throughout the Cold War, the base adapted to changing military needs by hosting a variety of aviation and technical training schools. This flexibility ensured the installation remained relevant as military technology and strategies evolved.
In 1993, Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) initiatives led to the end of airfield operations, and the installation transitioned to a new mission. The base was officially renamed Naval Support Activity Mid-South in 1995, reflecting its broader administrative and personnel support role.
Today, NSA Mid-South serves as a major Navy human resources center, housing the Navy Personnel Command and supporting over 7,500 military, civilian, and contract personnel.
The base remains a vital part of the local economy and continues to play a key role in Navy personnel management and support operations.

When you receive PCS orders to NSA Mid-South, start by reviewing your orders and contacting the base Transportation Office. They’ll guide you through setting up your move in the Defense Personal Property System (DPS), which is the official platform for planning and tracking all military moves. You’ll choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment—where movers pack and transport your items—or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), sometimes called a DITY move, where you move your own belongings and may be reimbursed.
You’re entitled to key PCS benefits, including Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) for up to 10 days of hotel costs while you secure housing, and a Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to help offset relocation expenses. Make sure you understand your weight allowances and keep receipts for all moving-related costs. DPS is your central hub for scheduling shipments, tracking progress, and filing claims if needed. For NSA Mid-South, base-specific arrival information and housing can be found through the NSA Mid-South Welcome Center, which supports new arrivals with local resources and contacts.

Schools & Childcare

NSA Mid-South does not have any on-base schools, so military families rely on local public school districts for K-12 education. The area around Millington offers several strong school options, with Shelby County Schools serving as the main district. The School Liaison Officer (SLO) is a key resource for families—they help with school registration, answer questions about local options, and guide families through special education or transfer processes. Contact the SLO early to make your transition smoother and ensure your child has the support they need.
