NSF Indian Head began operations in 1890 as the Naval Proving Ground, established to test naval ordnance and explosives. Its location along the Potomac River in Maryland provided a safe, remote area for live-fire testing and research.
The base quickly became a cornerstone for the Navy’s munitions development, supporting innovation in explosives and propellants.
During World War I and World War II, Indian Head expanded rapidly to meet the demands of large-scale conflict. New laboratories, production facilities, and storage bunkers were built to support increased production.
The base played a critical role in developing smokeless powder and advanced munitions, directly supporting the U.S. war effort.
Throughout the Cold War, Indian Head shifted focus to research and development of rocket propulsion and specialty energetics. The site hosted several key technical units, including the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division.
This period saw the base become a leader in chemical propulsion and EOD training, advancing the Navy’s capabilities in explosive ordnance disposal.
In 2005, the installation was officially renamed Naval Support Facility (NSF) Indian Head to reflect its broader support role. Today, NSF Indian Head houses critical Navy and joint-service commands.
The base remains vital to national security and the local economy, supporting innovation and readiness across the Department of Defense.
