NWS Earle was established during World War II to provide a secure location for loading, storing, and shipping ammunition in support of the U.S. Navy's Atlantic operations. Its unique design includes a 2.9-mile pier extending into Sandy Hook Bay, which allows safe transfer of munitions away from populated areas.
The base's inland and waterfront sections are connected by a dedicated rail line, ensuring rapid and secure transport of ordnance between key facilities. This infrastructure supports efficient movement and handling of critical materials.
Major expansions occurred during WWII and the Cold War as demand for ammunition storage and logistics surged. The base played a vital role in supplying the fleet during major conflicts, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm.
Over the decades, NWS Earle has hosted various ordnance handling and logistics units, adapting to evolving Navy requirements. These changes have ensured the base remains a key asset for military readiness.
The installation has retained its original name, Naval Weapons Station Earle, since its commissioning in 1943. The name honors Rear Admiral Ralph Earle, a leader in naval ordnance innovation.
Today, NWS Earle continues to serve as a critical munitions hub for the U.S. Navy, supporting Atlantic Fleet operations. The base also provides local economic benefits through employment and community partnerships.
