Military Base History

NWS Yorktown was established in 1918 to support the U.S. Navy’s growing munitions requirements during World War I. The site’s strategic location along the York River provided secure access for shipping and storage, making it ideal for military logistics.
Its original mission focused on the production, storage, and shipment of naval ordnance. This made NWS Yorktown a critical logistics hub for the Atlantic Fleet during the early twentieth century.
During World War II, the installation underwent significant expansion to meet the demands of global conflict. New magazines, piers, and rail lines were constructed, and the workforce grew rapidly to support increased operations.
The base played a vital role in supplying munitions for both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. It supported major operations such as the Normandy invasion, ensuring that U.S. forces had the resources needed for success.
Throughout the Cold War, NWS Yorktown adapted to evolving military needs. It became a center for advanced ordnance handling, missile storage, and research, reflecting the changing nature of warfare.
The base also supported the U.S. nuclear deterrence mission by managing special weapons. Over the years, various Navy and Marine Corps units have been stationed at Yorktown, including explosive ordnance disposal teams and logistics commands.
Today, NWS Yorktown continues to serve as a key ordnance logistics and storage facility for the U.S. Navy. It supports fleet operations, regional training, and joint service missions, maintaining its importance in national defense.
The installation is also a major employer in the local community. It contributes to regional security and economic stability, supporting both military and civilian personnel.
Name Changes: The installation was originally known as the Naval Mine Depot, Yorktown. In 1958, it was redesignated as Naval Weapons Station Yorktown to reflect its broader ordnance mission.

Arriving at Naval Weapons Station (NWS) Yorktown starts with receiving your PCS orders. Once you have orders in hand, contact your current and gaining base Transportation Offices to coordinate your move. You’ll choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where professional movers handle your items, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also known as a DITY move, if you prefer to move your belongings yourself. Each option has specific steps and entitlements, so review them carefully. The Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil is your main tool for scheduling and tracking your shipment. Use DPS to set up your move, upload documents, and communicate with the Transportation Office. Early action in DPS helps avoid delays, especially during busy summer months. You may be eligible for Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) to help cover hotel costs while you secure housing at Yorktown, and for Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to offset moving expenses. Review your entitlements before you move to make the most of these benefits. NWS Yorktown is near Williamsburg, so housing and hotel availability can change with tourist seasons.
