Base History & Name

Offutt Air Force Base began as Fort Crook, established in the 1890s to support Army infantry. In 1921, the site transitioned to an airfield, named Offutt Field in honor of 1st Lt. Jarvis Offutt, a World War I aviator from Omaha.

The base’s mission shifted dramatically during World War II, when the Glenn L. Martin Company built a massive bomber production plant on site. This facility produced B-29 Superfortresses, including the Enola Gay and Bockscar, which dropped atomic bombs on Japan.

The Cold War transformed Offutt into a strategic command center. In 1948, it became the headquarters for Strategic Air Command (SAC), responsible for America’s nuclear deterrence.

SAC’s presence brought extensive infrastructure upgrades, including command bunkers and advanced communications. The base played a crucial role in nuclear readiness and global surveillance throughout the Cold War.

Following the end of the Cold War, Offutt AFB adapted to new missions. In 1992, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) replaced SAC, continuing the base’s legacy as a hub for global command and control.

Today, Offutt supports a range of missions, including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, and remains a critical node in U.S. defense strategy. The base also contributes significantly to the local economy and community in eastern Nebraska.

Name changes:

  • Fort Crook (1890s–1924)

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) to Offutt AFB starts when you receive official orders. First, contact your losing base’s Transportation Office to schedule your move and get guidance on required paperwork. You’ll choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where movers pack and transport your items, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also known as DITY, where you move your belongings yourself and may receive reimbursement. Each option has pros and cons—review details in the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to decide what works best for your family. Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) can help offset costs during your transition. TLE reimburses you for temporary lodging and meals while you search for housing, and DLA helps with miscellaneous moving expenses. Register in DPS early to track your shipment, manage documents, and communicate with your Transportation Office. Offutt AFB’s location near Omaha means housing can be competitive; start your housing search as soon as possible and reach out to the base housing office for assistance.
