Patrick SFB PCS Guide
Base History & Name
Members of Air Forces Space's Detachment 3 oversaw the successful recovery of the Artemis 1 Orion capsule after its splashdown in the Pacific Ocean Dec. 11. This was following its 1.4 million-mile, 25-day journey, including 10 days of lunar orbit. This was the first voyage of NASA’s Orion...
Patrick Space Force Base began as Naval Air Station Banana River in 1940, supporting seaplane patrols and anti-submarine warfare during World War II. Its coastal location made it ideal for protecting shipping lanes and conducting training missions.
After the war, the base was deactivated but soon found new life as the Cold War began. In 1948, the U.S. Air Force took control and renamed it Patrick Air Force Base, honoring a key Air Force leader.
The base quickly became a hub for missile testing and space operations. In the 1950s and 1960s, it supported the burgeoning U.S. space program, serving as headquarters for the Air Force Missile Test Center and supporting launches from nearby Cape Canaveral.
Throughout the Cold War, Patrick AFB played a critical role in missile tracking, space launches, and supporting NASA’s crewed spaceflight missions. The 45th Space Wing managed launch operations and range safety for decades.
The base also hosted rescue squadrons and provided logistical support for military and civilian space activities. In December 2020, the base was officially renamed Patrick Space Force Base to reflect its central role in the newly established U.S. Space Force.
Today, it remains a vital center for space launch operations, range management, and support to both military and commercial space missions. Patrick Space Force Base contributes significantly to the Space Coast’s economy and identity.
Namesake
Patrick’s leadership helped establish the foundations of U.S. air power. He advocated for technological innovation and independent air operations, influencing the development of the modern Air Force. The base was named in his honor to recognize his lasting impact on military aviation.
