Scott Air Force Base was established in 1917 as Scott Field, primarily to support World War I pilot training and airship operations. Its original mission focused on providing a training ground for the Army's fledgling aviation units, reflecting the rapid growth of military aviation during the war.
The base's location near Belleville, Illinois, offered strategic access to rail and road networks, which aided logistics and personnel movement.
During the interwar years and World War II, Scott Field expanded significantly. The base became a hub for radio operator and mechanic training, earning a reputation as a center for technical excellence.
In 1948, the installation was officially renamed Scott Air Force Base following the creation of the U.S. Air Force as a separate branch. This period also saw the arrival of the Military Air Transport Service (MATS), which shifted the base's focus to air mobility and logistics.
Throughout the Cold War, Scott AFB played a vital role in global airlift operations. It hosted the Military Airlift Command (MAC) and later the Air Mobility Command (AMC), both critical to U.S. rapid deployment capabilities.
The base also supported aeromedical evacuation missions and communications advancements, reinforcing its strategic importance.
Today, Scott AFB serves as the headquarters for Air Mobility Command, U.S. Transportation Command, and several other major units. Its mission centers on global mobility, logistics, and cyber operations.
The base remains a key economic and community partner in the St. Clair County region, supporting both national defense and local development.
Name Changes:
- The installation was originally known as Scott Field from its founding in 1917 until 1948.
- In 1948, it was redesignated Scott Air Force Base to reflect the establishment of the independent U.S. Air Force.
Namesake
Scott's sacrifice symbolized the courage and dedication of enlisted personnel in the Army's aviation branch. Naming the base in his honor reflects the Air Force's recognition of enlisted contributions to military aviation history.
