Selfridge Air National Guard Base (ANGB) began operations in 1917 as Selfridge Field, serving as one of the nation's earliest military aviation training sites during World War I. Its original mission focused on pilot instruction and aircraft operations, quickly establishing itself as a key hub for Army Air Service activities in the Midwest.

During the interwar years and World War II, the base expanded significantly, hosting advanced flight training, fighter group deployments, and technical schools. Selfridge supported the Army Air Forces and later the U.S. Air Force, playing a vital role in preparing aircrews for combat.

The Tuskegee Airmen trained at Selfridge before deploying overseas, marking the base as a significant site in military and civil rights history.

Throughout the Cold War, Selfridge became a major Air Defense Command installation, hosting fighter-interceptor squadrons and radar units. The base adapted to evolving threats, supporting both active-duty and Air National Guard missions.

The installation's name changed from Selfridge Field to Selfridge Air Force Base in 1947, then to Selfridge Air National Guard Base in 1971, reflecting its transition to primarily Air National Guard control.

Today, Selfridge ANGB is a joint military facility supporting Air National Guard, Army National Guard, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and other federal and state agencies.

The base remains a critical training and operational center, contributing to national defense and providing economic benefits to the local community.

Namesake

Selfridge ANGB is named after Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge, a pioneering U.S. Army aviator. Born in 1882, Selfridge was an early advocate for military aviation and served as an engineer and pilot.

He became the first person to die in a powered airplane crash in 1908, while flying as a passenger with Orville Wright. His legacy is honored through the base's name, recognizing his contributions to the development of military aviation.
