Sheppard Air Force Base opened in 1941 near Wichita Falls, Texas, as a major training center for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Its first mission focused on technical training for aircraft mechanics, support personnel, and pilots, meeting the urgent need for skilled airmen as the U.S. entered the war.
The base expanded rapidly during WWII by adding new facilities and runways to serve thousands of trainees. Sheppard quickly became one of the largest technical training centers in the country, hosting both American and Allied personnel.
After the war, the base shifted to peacetime training but remained vital during the Cold War. Sheppard adapted its curriculum to support jet aircraft and missile systems, keeping pace with changing military technology.
Throughout the Cold War, Sheppard AFB housed major units like the 3750th Technical Training Wing and later the 82nd Training Wing, which still operates today. In 1981, the base became home to the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program (ENJJPT), a unique multinational initiative that trains NATO pilots.
Today, Sheppard AFB is the largest and most diverse training base in Air Education and Training Command (AETC). It provides technical and pilot training for U.S. and allied forces, supporting both national defense and the local economy.
The base has retained its original name since its establishment in 1941, with no significant official name changes over the decades.
Namesake
Senator Sheppard played a key role in advancing legislation that strengthened the U.S. military during the interwar period. His commitment to defense and his Texas roots made him a fitting namesake for the base, which was established shortly after his death.
