Military Base History
LAKE CITY, Fla., (Dec. 7, 2018) Lt. William Daniel, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay command chaplain, shakes the hand of Rexall Tobias, United States Marine Corps veteran, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lake City, Florida. Tobias served during the Korean War with the infantry. More than 15...
Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay began as a military installation in the late 1970s, when the U.S. Navy selected the site to support its growing fleet of ballistic missile submarines. The base's original mission focused on providing a secure, strategic homeport for the Navy's Atlantic-based Trident submarines, a critical element of the nation's nuclear deterrent during the Cold War.
Construction at Kings Bay accelerated in 1978, transforming the area from a small Army logistics depot into a state-of-the-art submarine base. Major facilities included submarine berths, a massive dry dock, and specialized weapons handling areas.
By 1989, the base was fully operational, supporting the arrival of the first Trident submarine, USS Tennessee (SSBN-734).
Over the decades, Kings Bay has hosted several key units, most notably Submarine Group 10 and Submarine Squadron 20. The base has played a pivotal role in maintaining the readiness and security of the U.S. Navy's strategic deterrent force.
During the post-Cold War era, Kings Bay adapted to new missions, including support for guided missile submarines (SSGNs) and advanced training for submarine crews.
Today, SUBASE Kings Bay remains the East Coast hub for the Navy's Ohio-class submarines. It supports national security, local economic growth, and community partnerships.
The installation has maintained its original name since establishment, with no significant name changes recorded.
