Base History & Name

Tinker Air Force Base began as the Midwest Air Depot in 1941, established to support aircraft maintenance and logistics during World War II. Its original mission focused on depot-level repair and supply for the Army Air Forces, quickly making it a vital logistics hub.

The base was renamed Tinker Field in 1942 to honor Major General Clarence L. Tinker, the first Native American major general in the U.S. Army. In 1948, it officially became Tinker Air Force Base after the creation of the U.S. Air Force as a separate branch.

Rapid expansion during World War II led to the construction of hangars, warehouses, and runways, transforming Tinker into one of the largest air depots in the country. The base played a key role in maintaining B-17, B-24, and later B-29 bombers.

During the Cold War, Tinker AFB adapted to support new aircraft, including the B-52 Stratofortress and KC-135 Stratotanker. It also became a center for jet engine overhaul, further expanding its mission.

Significant units stationed at Tinker include the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, 552nd Air Control Wing, and 507th Air Refueling Wing. The base has supported operations from the Korean War through the Gulf War and into the present.

Tinker AFB provides logistics, maintenance, and command and control capabilities, ensuring readiness for a wide range of missions. Its support has been crucial for both national defense and global operations.

Today, Tinker AFB remains a cornerstone of Air Force logistics and sustainment. It is the largest single-site employer in Oklahoma, supporting both military and civilian personnel.

The base continues to modernize and support advanced aircraft, playing a critical role in national defense and the local economy. Its ongoing evolution ensures it remains vital to the Air Force mission.

Namesake

Major General Clarence L. Tinker was born in 1887 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, and was a member of the Osage Nation. He became the first Native American to reach the rank of major general in the U.S. Army.

Tinker served with distinction in both World Wars. He commanded the Seventh Air Force in Hawaii during World War II and led bombing missions against Japanese forces. He was killed in action during the Battle of Midway in June 1942, becoming the first American general officer killed in WWII. His leadership and sacrifice are honored in the naming of Tinker Air Force Base.

The PCS process to Tinker AFB starts when you receive your official orders. Next, contact the Base Transportation Office to schedule your move and discuss your options. You can choose a Household Goods (HHG) shipment or a Personally Procured Move (PPM, also called DITY). Each move type has unique steps and benefits—review them early to decide what fits your needs best. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to manage your move, track shipments, and upload documents. DPS is your main tool for scheduling and monitoring your PCS. Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) help offset costs. TLE covers some lodging expenses while you secure housing, and DLA helps with relocation costs. Know your allowances before you move. Tinker AFB’s location in Oklahoma can mean high demand for moves during summer. Plan ahead and communicate with your TMO for a smoother experience.

Housing Options

Tinker AFB offers a mix of on-base privatized housing, managed by Balfour Beatty Communities, and a strong local rental market in nearby Oklahoma City and surrounding suburbs. Most personnel choose between on-base neighborhoods or community housing, with additional options like the Rental Partnership Program (RPP) to help make off-base renting more affordable. Waitlists for on-base homes can vary, especially for larger family units or during PCS season. Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) in the Oklahoma City area is competitive, reflecting local rental prices. For example, an E-5 with dependents receives about $1,623 per month in 2025. To estimate your specific BAH, use our BAH Calculator. BAH typically covers most rental costs in the area, but higher-end neighborhoods may require out-of-pocket expenses. The cost of living is moderate compared to other Air Force bases, and both on-base and off-base options offer convenient commutes and family-friendly amenities.
