Tinker Air Force Base began as the Midwest Air Depot in 1941, established to support aircraft maintenance and logistics during World War II. Its original mission focused on depot-level repair and supply for the Army Air Forces, quickly making it a vital logistics hub.
The base was renamed Tinker Field in 1942 to honor Major General Clarence L. Tinker, the first Native American major general in the U.S. Army. In 1948, it officially became Tinker Air Force Base after the creation of the U.S. Air Force as a separate branch.
Rapid expansion during World War II led to the construction of hangars, warehouses, and runways, transforming Tinker into one of the largest air depots in the country. The base played a key role in maintaining B-17, B-24, and later B-29 bombers.
During the Cold War, Tinker AFB adapted to support new aircraft, including the B-52 Stratofortress and KC-135 Stratotanker. It also became a center for jet engine overhaul, further expanding its mission.
Significant units stationed at Tinker include the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, 552nd Air Control Wing, and 507th Air Refueling Wing. The base has supported operations from the Korean War through the Gulf War and into the present.
Tinker AFB provides logistics, maintenance, and command and control capabilities, ensuring readiness for a wide range of missions. Its support has been crucial for both national defense and global operations.
Today, Tinker AFB remains a cornerstone of Air Force logistics and sustainment. It is the largest single-site employer in Oklahoma, supporting both military and civilian personnel.
The base continues to modernize and support advanced aircraft, playing a critical role in national defense and the local economy. Its ongoing evolution ensures it remains vital to the Air Force mission.

You can choose a Household Goods (HHG) shipment or a Personally Procured Move (PPM, also called DITY). Each move type has unique steps and benefits—review them early to decide what fits your needs best. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to manage your move, track shipments, and upload documents. DPS is your main tool for scheduling and monitoring your PCS.
