Tripler Army Medical Center (AMC) began as a small hospital in 1907 to serve U.S. Army personnel stationed in Hawaii. Its original mission focused on providing medical care to troops in the Pacific, a critical need given Hawaii’s strategic location.
World War II prompted rapid expansion as the U.S. military presence in the Pacific surged. In 1948, the current iconic pink hospital building opened on Moanalua Ridge, replacing the original facility and establishing Tripler as the largest military hospital in the Pacific region.
Throughout the Cold War and Vietnam War eras, Tripler AMC supported military operations by treating casualties and serving as a key medical evacuation and referral center for the Pacific Command. The hospital has hosted a range of units, including the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity-Hawaii and specialized medical detachments.
Today, Tripler AMC remains the premier military medical facility in the Pacific, providing care to active duty personnel, veterans, and their families. It also serves as a major teaching hospital and disaster response hub for the region.
The installation has retained its original name since its dedication in honor of Brigadier General Charles Stuart Tripler, with no significant official name changes.
