Base History & Name

Tripler Army Medical Center (AMC) began as a small hospital in 1907 to serve U.S. Army personnel stationed in Hawaii. Its original mission focused on providing medical care to troops in the Pacific, a critical need given Hawaii’s strategic location.

World War II prompted rapid expansion as the U.S. military presence in the Pacific surged. In 1948, the current iconic pink hospital building opened on Moanalua Ridge, replacing the original facility and establishing Tripler as the largest military hospital in the Pacific region.

Throughout the Cold War and Vietnam War eras, Tripler AMC supported military operations by treating casualties and serving as a key medical evacuation and referral center for the Pacific Command. The hospital has hosted a range of units, including the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity-Hawaii and specialized medical detachments.

Today, Tripler AMC remains the premier military medical facility in the Pacific, providing care to active duty personnel, veterans, and their families. It also serves as a major teaching hospital and disaster response hub for the region.

The installation has retained its original name since its dedication in honor of Brigadier General Charles Stuart Tripler, with no significant official name changes.

Namesake

Brigadier General Charles Stuart Tripler (1806–1866) was a pioneering U.S. Army surgeon who revolutionized military medicine. He served with distinction during the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, developing the "Tripler Ambulance System" that improved battlefield casualty evacuation. Tripler's innovations in field hospitals and medical logistics set new standards for military healthcare and saved countless lives. The hospital was named in his honor to recognize his lasting impact on Army medicine.

Housing Options

Tripler AMC personnel have several housing options. On-base housing is limited, and many rely on rentals in Honolulu and nearby areas. Privatized housing is managed by Island Palm Communities, offering family homes on military installations across Oahu. Waitlists are common due to high demand and limited inventory. Most incoming families start their search early and consider both on-base and off-base options. The high cost of living in Honolulu makes planning essential. The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) reflects local market rates. For example, an E-5 with dependents receives around $3,513/month in 2025. You can estimate your specific BAH using our BAH Calculator.
