The United States Naval Academy (USNA) was established in 1845 in Annapolis, Maryland, to train officers for the U.S. Navy. Its original mission focused on providing a rigorous academic and professional foundation for midshipmen, combining classroom instruction with practical seamanship. The Academy replaced the earlier Naval School at Fort Severn, marking a significant step in formalizing naval education in the United States.
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Academy expanded its curriculum and facilities. Major construction phases included the addition of Bancroft Hall, the largest dormitory in the world. The Academy also developed advanced engineering and science buildings to support its growing academic programs.
The Academy adapted to new naval technologies, ensuring graduates were prepared for evolving maritime challenges. This commitment to innovation helped maintain the Academy’s reputation as a leader in naval education.
During World War II, the USNA accelerated its programs to meet wartime demands, graduating officers in three years instead of four. The Academy played a vital role in supplying the Navy with leaders during both world wars and the Cold War.
Many notable units, such as the Brigade of Midshipmen, have been central to Academy life. These groups foster leadership, camaraderie, and a sense of tradition among students.
Today, the USNA remains a premier institution for training Navy and Marine Corps officers. It continues to evolve, integrating modern technology and leadership training to prepare future leaders.
The Academy is a key part of the Annapolis community and a symbol of naval tradition. The institution has always been known as the United States Naval Academy since its establishment, with no significant official name changes recorded.

Arriving at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) starts with receiving official orders and promptly contacting your local Transportation Office. You'll need to choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move and may receive reimbursement. The Defense Personal Property System (DPS) is your main tool for scheduling and tracking your move, so register and start your move in DPS as soon as you have orders. You may be eligible for key entitlements, including Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) to help cover hotel costs while house-hunting, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to offset moving expenses. USNA is located in Annapolis, Maryland, so standard CONUS entitlements apply. Early planning helps ensure you secure lodging and coordinate delivery of your household goods without delay. Check base-specific guidance for any unique requirements or restrictions.
