Base History & Name

Vance Air Force Base began as a World War II pilot training center near Enid, Oklahoma. The U.S. Army Air Forces established the base in 1941 to address the urgent need for new pilots.

Its original mission focused on advanced flight training for cadets preparing for combat roles overseas. The base quickly became a key site for developing skilled aviators.

During World War II, the base rapidly expanded with new runways, hangars, and barracks. These additions supported a surge in trainees and increased operational capacity.

The base produced thousands of pilots, many of whom served in major theaters of the war. After the war, the base briefly closed but soon reopened to support Cold War pilot training needs.

Throughout the Cold War, Vance AFB hosted key training units, including the 71st Flying Training Wing. The base adapted to new aircraft and training methods to meet evolving threats.

It became a hub for undergraduate pilot training, welcoming students from the U.S. and allied nations. This international focus strengthened partnerships and improved pilot readiness.

Today, Vance AFB remains a vital part of Air Education and Training Command. Its mission centers on producing professional pilots for the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and allied air forces.

The base also plays a significant role in the Enid community, providing jobs and supporting local initiatives. Its presence boosts the local economy and fosters community partnerships.

Name Changes:

  • The base was originally known as Air Corps Basic Flying School, Enid.
  • It was renamed Vance Army Airfield in 1942.
  • In 1949, it received its current name, Vance Air Force Base, to honor Lt. Col. Leon Robert Vance Jr.

Namesake

Lt. Col. Leon Robert Vance Jr. was a decorated U.S. Army Air Forces officer from Enid, Oklahoma. He received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during a bombing mission over France in June 1944.

Despite being severely wounded, Vance piloted his damaged B-24 back to England, saving his crew. He was lost at sea later that year. The base was named in his honor to recognize his bravery and connection to the region.

Housing Options

Vance AFB offers a mix of on-base privatized housing and off-base rentals in the Enid area. Most military families at Vance AFB choose between modern homes managed by privatized housing or community rentals, as the base maintains a smaller housing footprint. The Rental Partnership Program (RPP) is available but less common, and most off-base options are in Enid or nearby small towns. Your Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is the main factor in your housing budget. For 2025, an E-5 with dependents receives about $1,158/month at Vance AFB. Use our BAH Calculator to estimate your rate. Enid’s cost of living is moderate, and rental prices are generally below BAH for most ranks, but availability can tighten during PCS season. Waitlists for on-base housing are common, so many families start their search early and consider off-base rentals as a backup.
