Simplify Your PCS Move with the Household Goods Weight Estimator
Planning a PCS (Permanent Change of Station) move? Our Weight Estimator helps you calculate the total weight of your household goods (HHG) and Professional Gear (PBP&E) to ensure you stay within your weight allowance. Avoid surprises by estimating your move weight without needing a spreadsheet or moving company quote.
What is the HHG Weight Allowance and Why Does It Matter?
The Department of Defense (DoD) sets a weight allowance for HHG during a PCS move, based on your rank and dependency status, as outlined in the Joint Travel Regulations (JTR). For example, an E-4 with dependents might have an 8,000-pound allowance, while an O-3 with dependents could have 13,000 pounds. Exceeding this limit may result in out-of-pocket costs for the excess weight.
Professional Books, Papers, and Equipment (PBP&E) are weighed separately and do not count against your HHG allowance, making it critical to categorize these items accurately.
PCS Weight Allowances by Rank and Dependency Status
Below is a table of standard PCS weight allowances as per JTR par. U5310-B, covering officer and enlisted personnel. Note that special roles (e.g., Senior Enlisted Advisors) or case-by-case authorizations may have higher limits.

How to Use the Weight Estimator for Your PCS Move
Our Weight Estimator simplifies the process of calculating your move weight. Follow these steps:
Go through each section (e.g., Living Room, Bedroom, Appliances) and enter the quantity of items you plan to move.
For items not listed, click “Add Other Item” and input the name and dimensions (Length, Width, Height in inches) to estimate their weight.
Identify and list Professional Gear (PBP&E) separately, as it doesn’t count toward your HHG allowance.
Review the total estimated weight for HHG and PBP&E to ensure you’re within your allowance.
Key Considerations for Estimating Your Move Weight
Accurately estimating your HHG weight helps you plan your PCS move effectively. Keep these factors in mind:
Weight Limits: Check your specific weight allowance based on rank and dependency status via the Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO).
Item Types: Some items, like pianos (e.g., Parlor Grand at 80 cu.ft.) or large appliances (e.g., Side-by-Side Refrigerator at 52 cu.ft.), can significantly impact your total weight.
Prohibited Items: Certain items (e.g., hazardous materials, perishable goods) cannot be shipped as HHG. Contact your local transportation office via Military OneSource for guidance.
Tip: Actual weights may vary due to item density and packing methods. Schedule a pre-move survey with your transportation office for a more precise estimate.
Tips for Managing Your PCS Move Weight
To stay within your weight allowance and streamline your move, consider the following:
Downsize: Sell, donate, or dispose of items you no longer need, especially heavy furniture or outdated appliances.
Track PBP&E: Clearly label Professional Gear (e.g., work-related books, uniforms) to ensure it’s weighed separately and doesn’t count against your HHG limit.
Pack Smart: Use appropriate cartons (e.g., Dishpacks for fragile items, Wardrobe cartons for clothes) to optimize space and protect your belongings.
