Westover Air Reserve Base (ARB) began as Westover Field in 1939 to bolster U.S. air power before World War II. Its original mission focused on training bomber crews and supporting the Army Air Corps. The base's strategic location in Massachusetts made it a key hub for air operations on the East Coast.
During World War II, Westover rapidly expanded to meet wartime needs. Construction of new runways and hangars enabled it to host heavy bomber units, including B-17 and B-24 aircraft. The base played a vital role in training and deploying crews for overseas combat.
After the war, Westover transitioned to a peacetime mission but remained a critical part of the nation's air defense network. Its continued importance ensured ongoing investment and activity at the installation.
The Cold War era saw Westover designated as a Strategic Air Command (SAC) base. It housed B-52 bombers and KC-135 tankers, serving as a key nuclear deterrent installation. The base underwent several upgrades, including runway extensions and new alert facilities, to support its expanded mission.
In 1974, Westover shifted from active-duty Air Force control to the Air Force Reserve, becoming Westover Air Reserve Base. Today, it is home to the 439th Airlift Wing, operating C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft. The base supports global airlift missions, humanitarian relief, and serves as a vital economic and emergency response asset for western Massachusetts.
Westover ARB has retained its name since its establishment, with no significant official name changes. This continuity reflects its enduring role in U.S. military and regional history.
