Whiteman Air Force Base began as Sedalia Glider Base in 1942, built to support World War II training for glider pilots. The base's original mission focused on preparing aircrews for airborne operations, which were essential to Allied success in Europe.
After the war, the base shifted to a reserve training role, reflecting the changing needs of the U.S. military during peacetime. This transition marked the start of the base’s evolving mission.
In 1955, the installation was renamed Whiteman Air Force Base to honor 2nd Lt. George A. Whiteman, a Missouri native and one of the first U.S. airmen killed in World War II.
During the Cold War, Whiteman AFB became a key site for Strategic Air Command, hosting the 351st Strategic Missile Wing and Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles. This marked a dramatic shift from its earlier training mission to a critical role in nuclear deterrence.
Following the end of the Cold War, Whiteman AFB underwent another transformation. In the early 1990s, it was selected as the home of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, making it the only base in the world to operate this advanced aircraft.
The 509th Bomb Wing, a historic unit with roots in the atomic missions of World War II, was reactivated at Whiteman to support the B-2 mission. This move reinforced the base’s importance in U.S. strategic operations.
Today, Whiteman AFB remains a cornerstone of U.S. strategic power. It supports global strike operations, provides vital employment to the local community, and continues to adapt to new defense challenges.
The base's legacy reflects its evolution from a World War II training site to a hub of cutting-edge airpower. Whiteman AFB’s story showcases its enduring role in national defense.
