Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (Wright-Patt) traces its roots to the earliest days of military aviation. The base began as Wilbur Wright Field and Fairfield Aviation General Supply Depot in 1917, supporting pilot training and aircraft logistics during World War I.
Its original mission was to advance military aviation through research, development, and training. In the 1920s, the Air Service Engineering Division was established, making Wright-Patt a hub for innovation and laying the foundation for future Air Force research.
During World War II, the base expanded rapidly to meet the demands of the war effort. New hangars, laboratories, and runways were constructed to support increased activity and growth.
The base merged with nearby Patterson Field in 1948, officially forming Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This merger united research, logistics, and flight operations, making it one of the largest and most important Air Force installations in the world.
Throughout the Cold War, Wright-Patt played a central role in aerospace research and development. The base hosted the Air Force Materiel Command and the Air Force Research Laboratory, supporting projects such as jet propulsion, stealth technology, and space systems.
The base also became home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, preserving aviation history for the public and showcasing the evolution of military flight.
Today, Wright-Patterson AFB remains a cornerstone of Air Force innovation. The base supports advanced research, acquisition, and logistics, serving as a major employer in the Dayton, Ohio area.
Wright-Patt continues to drive technological progress and national defense, shaping the future of military aviation and science for generations to come.

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base starts with receiving your official orders. Once you have orders, contact the Base Transportation Office to start your move in the Defense Personal Property System (DPS). DPS is your hub for scheduling shipments, tracking household goods (HHG), and managing Personally Procured Moves (PPM, formerly DITY). Most members choose either a government-arranged HHG shipment or a PPM, where you move your own items for potential reimbursement. Each move type has unique rules—review them in DPS before deciding. You may be eligible for key entitlements. Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) helps cover short-term lodging while you secure housing, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps offset PCS costs. Wright-Patt offers strong local support for newcomers—check the base newcomer’s guide for area info, schools, and spouse employment resources. For smooth processing, keep your travel receipts and submit claims promptly via the official portals. Find more at the links below.
