Maxwell Air Force Base began as Wright Field, a World War I aircraft repair depot, in 1918. The base’s original mission focused on supporting the Army Air Service with logistics and maintenance.
In 1922, the base was renamed Maxwell Field to honor 2d Lt. William C. Maxwell, a local aviator who died in service. This renaming marked a significant moment in the base’s early history.
The base's role shifted in the 1930s when it became home to the Air Corps Tactical School. This institution served as the intellectual center for airpower doctrine before and during World War II.
This period established Maxwell as a hub for military education and innovation. Military leaders and thinkers gathered here to shape the future of airpower.
World War II brought rapid expansion to Maxwell, with new facilities and thousands of personnel arriving to support training and operations. The base trained aircrews and supported the war effort, cementing its importance in the Army Air Forces.
During the Cold War, Maxwell continued its educational mission by hosting the Air University and other key institutions. It became a center for professional military education, shaping Air Force leaders and doctrine.
Today, Maxwell AFB remains the headquarters of Air University, providing advanced education for Air Force and allied officers. The base supports several major units and plays a vital role in the Montgomery, Alabama community.
Its legacy as a center for airpower thought and leadership endures. Maxwell’s influence extends across the Air Force and beyond.
No significant name changes have occurred since its designation as Maxwell Field in 1922. The base became Maxwell Air Force Base after the Air Force’s establishment in 1947.

When you receive PCS orders to Maxwell AFB, start by reviewing your orders and contacting the base Transportation Office to discuss your move options. Most service members choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM, formerly DITY), which lets you move your belongings yourself for potential reimbursement.
Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule and track your shipment. This system is required for all moves and helps you manage paperwork and claims. Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) can offset out-of-pocket costs during your move. TLE helps cover temporary lodging while you secure housing, and DLA provides a one-time payment to help with relocation expenses. Maxwell AFB has on-base lodging, but it fills quickly during peak PCS season. Reach out to the base early to reserve a room or explore off-base options. Visit the base newcomer’s site for local tips and current requirements.
