Military Base History
Maj. Gen. Lawerence met members of the USAPT prior to the team's jump into Redstone Arsenal's celebration of the Army's 250th birthday celebration on June 7, 2025.
Redstone Arsenal began as a chemical munitions plant during World War II, established in 1941 to support the U.S. Army's ordnance needs. The original mission focused on producing chemical weapons and conventional ammunition, reflecting the urgent demands of the war.
After WWII, the site transitioned to peacetime operations and soon became a hub for rocket and missile development. In the early Cold War era, Redstone Arsenal played a pivotal role in the U.S. missile program.
The arrival of Dr. Wernher von Braun and his team of German rocket scientists in 1950 marked a turning point. Their work led to the development of the Redstone and Jupiter missiles, which were foundational to both military and space exploration efforts.
The base became synonymous with the Army Ballistic Missile Agency and later supported NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, established on-site in 1960.
Throughout the Cold War and beyond, Redstone Arsenal expanded its mission. It hosted key Army commands, including the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) and the Missile Defense Agency.
The installation became a center for research, development, and testing of advanced weaponry and defense systems.
Today, Redstone Arsenal serves as a critical center for Army logistics, missile defense, and space operations. It supports over 70 tenant organizations and plays a vital role in the local economy of Huntsville, Alabama.
The base has retained its original name since establishment, with no significant official name changes.
